Government to Introduce Green Number Plates for EVs

In order to “turbo-charge” zero emission revolution, the Government launch the idea of pure electric vehicles to have green number plates.

The idea could help drivers benefit from:

  • Free/cheaper parking.
  • Priority access to limited-use lanes currently reserved for buses of car sharing.

Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary, said, “The UK is in the driving seat of global efforts to tackle vehicle emissions and climate change and improve air quality, but we want to accelerate our progress. Green number plates are a really positive and exciting way to help everyone recognise the increasing number of electric vehicles on our roads. By increasing awareness of these vehicles and the benefits they bring to their drivers and our environment, we will turbo-charge the zero emission revolution.”

Aiming to make the UK the best place in the work to own an EV, the Department of Transport plans a £1.6 billion package of support.

As well as this, a zero benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax percentage rate for pure electric cars has been put in place.
