VW Roll Out Augmented Reality Headsets For Van Technicians

In order to speed up complex repair work and to save customers 5 years of downtime (equal to £1M.), Volkswagen rolls out augmented reality headsets for Van Technicians across its UK van network.

This technology allows experts based at its Technical Support Centre to send precise visual instructions remotely to technicians at Van Centres and Mobile Service Clinics.

According to VW, this will speed up any maintenance issues and efficiently as possible.

A trail that was taken place saved customers a year of downtime, equal to nearly £250,000, with a repair efficiency up by 93%.

There was also a reduction of over 2.5 tonnes of CO2 for the Technical Support Centre as there was no need for physical travel.

The RealWear glasses include a:

  • Microphone.
  • Head camera.
  • Display screen.
  • Voice activation.

All of the 67 Van Centres and 30 authorised repairers across the UK will have access to a pair of the glasses.

Technicians can use this technology to connect to the Technical Support Centre if they face any complex or unusual servicing points. They will then be supported through the diagnosis and repair by:

  • Augmenting images.
  • Wiring diagrams.
  • Repair suggestions

David Hanna, head of service and parts at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: “Following a hugely successful trial, we have decided to invest in the augmented reality technology to allow us to support our world class technicians and valued customers alike. As part of our Working With You promise, we are committed to keeping customer vehicles on the road and minimising downtime – this technology provides the perfect solution by reducing the time a van spends in the workshop as well as improving the sustainability of our technical support operation.”
